The news that derails a little

Ganna sticks to the classic position for 45 minutes, Xavier raises his stem

Filippo Ganna has told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he will not use his new time trial position, lower on the handlebars, in the World Championships time trial, an effort of around 45 minutes. He will stick with his more classic position.

In his garage, Xavier lowers his handlebar with an Allen key, spacers and a coffee mug on the floor.

Filippo Ganna has a new time trial position, and he has decided nobody will see it at the Worlds. It means getting lower on the handlebars while keeping the saddle at the same height.

“I’m starting to feel quite comfortable even with this slightly more ‘extreme’ posture, so to speak. However, for a 45-minute effort, I’ll probably stick with the more classic one,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. And also: “In the last training camp, in Livigno, I continued along this path. And if this World Championship time trial had been shorter, we would have used it.”

Dropping the bars and keeping the saddle, I did that one winter, in the garage, with an Allen key and a lot of enthusiasm. The Sunday after, I held the position as far as the square. Then I was up on the hoods, talking. Take away the wind, take away the talking, take away the coffee: what’s left is a bloke on the hoods. At least he knows in advance when he’s getting it out.

It was with his old position that he won the Giro d’Italia time trial and then the Italian time trial championship. His record includes two world time trial titles and an Hour record. His last individual time trial before the Worlds was the one at the Tour de France, where the hilly course worked against him.

Ahead of him there is Remco Evenepoel, winner of the last three world time trial titles. Ganna has not beaten him against the clock since 2023.

A position that is announced is not a position that is used. I note the one that presents itself at the start, and nothing before that.
